Time is the only thing that we all have an equal amount of. No matter where we live, what we believe, what we do we all have the same 24 hours a day. If you really think about this it is hugely powerful thought, if Nelson Mandella, Warren Buffet, Richard Branson etc don't have extra time to do all they do, how do they do all they do? The secret is making the most effective use of the time that we have. To do this you must have the Desire to improve the quality of your time management, Decide how you want to use the time that you have available, the Discipline to use a new time management system and the Determination to keep using and refining your system despite the distractions that life will throw at you.
A simple system to use is:
1. Make time to plan your day, your task list or to do list the night before or early that morning
2. Allocate a time estimate to the task
3. Add up all the individual totals for an overall daily total
4. If you find for example that you have 10 hours of tasks but only 8 hours available to do them you may want to push some of the lower priority task to another day so that you set yourself up for success, ticking or crossing off a complete list gives you satisfaction and momentum!
5. Allow for breaks and interuptions
6. Prioritise the tasks High, medium or low (or use the A,B,C,D,E method)
7. Review your day before going to bed, cross off or highlight the completed task, ask, what did I do well today? What do I need to improve tomorrow?
Always be aware of where you spend your time, use a time log or the Time Management Quadrant Matrix mentioned in Steven Covey's brilliant book 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People'
There really are not many things you can do with time: 1. Sell it 2. Invest it 3. Waste it so be careful where you spend the majority of your time.
